Fatal Crash
A medical bus collided head-on with a truck in Ipiranga, Paraná at 3:30 am, killing 23 people, most on the bus, including the truck driver. The bus, owned by Imbituva’s health department, was carrying patients to medical centers in Curitiba when the crash happened on the highway connecting the south to São Paulo.
The collision was described as a head-on impact when the truck veered into the bus’s lane. Local images show the bus smashed to pieces beside the truck on the roadside.
Impact and Response
The highway remained closed for hours, causing a long line of vehicles. Police authorities have not released information about the truck’s occupants. The accident occurred on a heavily trafficked highway that connects Paraná to São Paulo, the country’s wealthiest state.
Imbituva’s health department confirmed that the bus was part of a patient transport fleet. Most of the victims were patients being transferred to hospitals in Curitiba.
Traffic Context
Fatal traffic accidents are common in Brazil. On the previous Sunday, a bus traveling in Rio de Janeiro overturned, killing 8 people. In February, another bus returning from a religious festival in the northeast veered off the road and overturned, killing at least 16 people.
The Federal Highway Police highlighted that the region suffers from heavy traffic and maintenance issues, factors that contribute to the high fatality rate on Brazilian roads.
